Chapter 26

The day after the meeting at Toni’s apartment to discuss the situation, John and Samir met after their squash game to work on the plan to hold a special meeting of owners. They both belonged to an exclusive racquet club in the city. They tried to meet every week, but Samir’s erratic schedule in the past year had interfered with the plan. The club membership included use of the club’s bar and restaurant, which they used often as a quiet oasis from their hectic lives. They both decided to stick with coffee until they finished their discussion.

Samir looked at John in his casual ‘off-duty’ clothing which Samir bet had cost more than he spent in a year on clothes. Samir didn’t pay much attention to style – he bought good suits from the same store every year since he had to look good for work, but supplemented his office wardrobe with jeans and sweats from a department store. John, on the other hand, looked like an ad from GQ magazine.

They got their coffees and prepared to work. After their discussion the previous evening, Toni had e-mailed them a template to use to start the process. They were confident that they could figure this out.

“So how do you want to do this?” asked Samir.

“Let’s just look at the form,” responded John. “Probably the process of filling it out will give us some ideas of what we have to do next.”

Samir opened the template on his tablet and looked at the first question: ‘Condominium Corporation Legal Name.’

“Hmm,” said Samir.” What does that mean?” John, you’re the lawyer – everything with the word ‘legal’ – it’s going to be your turn to answer.”

“Yes, sir!” responded John playfully.

Samir gave him a frowning look. “C’mon, man, this is serious. This is our home we’re talking about.”

“I know, Samir, but I’m just not as sure as you and Toni are that there’s something going on. However, I’m happy to go through this exercise and see what other owners in the building think. So – the legal name, that’s probably on that document you got from Fatima – you know, the reserve fund study.”

“Right, okay, I’ll check it out when I get home and fill it in. What’s next? It asks how we’re going to deliver this paper? It says ‘By delivering to the president or secretary or by registered mail or by depositing at the corporation’s address for service.’ So, I guess we’ll do either of the first two. What do you think?”

“We know the president is Eric, right? Do we know which unit he owns?”

“I’m pretty sure he has a penthouse,” responded Samir. “I’ll make a note to ask Fatima tomorrow.”

“Or we can mail it, that way we have a paper trail,” noted John. “I know obviously that’s essential in the legal business and this might end up somehow in the legal system, so I think we should maybe do both methods of delivery, just to cover our bases.”

“O.K.,” agreed Samir. “So, what’s next?
